It can be challenging to carry out previously simple tasks when you have metal braces, from basic brushing and flossing to eating some of your favorite foods. But while you wait to have a straight, beautiful smile, there is no need to dramatically alter your oral hygiene routine! Here are a few easy tips to improve your oral care.
- Brush & Floss
- Rinse with Mouthwash
- Visit the Orthodontist Often
Brushing and flossing are critical when you have braces because you’ll have more nooks and crannies where bacteria can grow. Before you begin brushing your teeth, make sure to remove any rubber bands that you’re wearing. Then brush your teeth as you normally would, but pay careful attention to brush meticulously around your brackets and wires. Use small, gentle circles as you brush, and even tilt your brush to cover every angle of your teeth. When you get your braces off, you won’t want your teeth to have spots of discoloration from poor brushing! As for flossing, ask your orthodontist and dentist for a demonstration of the best way to floss are with braces. We often recommend floss threaders or water flossers.
Although using an alcohol-free or natural mouth rinse isn’t always necessary to do during your normal oral hygiene routine, it’s a great way to ensure that you’re keeping your breath fresh and fabulous when you have braces. Rinsing also helps dislodge any food particles that may be stuck in hard-to-reach places.
The best way to make sure that you’re doing a exceptional job maintaining your oral hygiene while you have braces is to see your orthodontist regularly. Diligently follow every direction and ask clarifying questions if you’re confused about any part of your orthodontic care and treatment.
